News flash: The federal government has overstepped its bounds. I realize that most of you are well aware of this fact, but I must say that too much blame is being directed at our central government. While the founders wrote a Constitution with enumerated powers that only allowed the federal government a minute amount of authority, they also made sure that the people would have a way to fight back if they did attempt to ignore their limits. It is a sort of check or balance if you will. The Tenth Amendment was incorporated into the Bill of Rights to keep government close to home where it belongs. ” The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively or to the people.”
How then can the feds take so much that does not belong to them? Plain and simple, we let them. We vote for state officials that have a track record of not standing up for our rights. Not only do we vote for these men and women but we allow them to continue ignoring their Constitutional duties once they are in office. This means we share just as much of the blame for sitting around and turning a blind eye to what has been going on for far to long. If you take nothing else from this article please understand that this did not begin with Barack Obama and a bunch of newly elected Republicans will not save us. This back and forth game between the two parties must stop. I am not advocating a third party. I am merely suggesting that we must be careful which Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians, or any other party officials we elect. Ask yourself, “what have they done to prove themselves in the past?” If they have been in office and did not introduce or support legislation to assert our Tenth Amendment rights than they failed us. They had their chance. They should not receive another one. They will only let you down. VOTE THEM OUT!
You may be wondering if its possible to reverse this trend and if so how to go about doing it. It is possible but we must affect the political atmosphere. I will use an example here to bring this into perspective. Not to long ago the GOP and its candidates/elected officials were not even considering using the words freedom or Constitution. Last week I received a newsletter from my county GOP asking everyone to come out and listen to the candidates and help restore the Constitution. Why? They lost the Presidential election. They lost both houses. The Tea parties popped up all around them. The atmosphere changed. Their is a feeling of fear that if they do not impress the Tea parties they may not regain the power they lost.
Some would say I give to much credit to the Tea parties and that the two parties do this every time they lose the majority. I would agree with them on this for the most part but this is the first time I recall candidates bringing up the Constitution in their speeches. I will give the Tea parties some credit for bringing Constitutional debate to the forefront but time will tell if they are truly seeking Constitutional government or simply want to regain the majority again.
Regardless of which way it goes after the election, it is up to us to keep the political atmosphere tense. We must not give a few moderate candidates leeway just because they made a few promises and beat the incumbent. We must not allow incumbents who win in November to feel like they are doing something right just because they won their seat again. This is were the problem lies. We are to blame for thinking that after the voting polls are closed that we can sit back and let these public servants do as they promised they would. THEY WILL NOT KEEP UP THEIR END OF THE DEAL!
If we are to regain our rights as sovereign states, we must stay on top of it. We need numbers and we need to keep the pressure on. Spread the word and inform others every chance you get. Attend political rallies and party meetings. More often than not, elected officials will be speaking at these events and there is usually time for question and answer. Bring the tough questions. “As a state legislator what legislation did you introduce or support that asserted our Tenth Amendment rights and helped protect the citizens of GA from an ever growing and overspending federal government?” Become a registered lobbyist and show up in committees to testify. Pull them off the floor while they are debating law. This is an effective way to get our point across in the chambers were the Tenth Amendment is supposed to be discussed daily.(www.lobbyistforlifeandliberty.org) Join political parties and take leadership roles. But most of all inform as many people as you can and grow our numbers every chance you get.
This is a never ending battle. If we are going to win we must be persistent and not blame others for what is going on around us. If the federal government is ignoring their Constitutional boundaries I would dare to say that most citizens are ignoring their Constitutional duties. Let’s quit playing the blame game and instead change the political atmosphere.
